Interest is calculated as principal × rate × tenure ÷ 12. Banks compute on actual days ÷ 365, so your statement may differ by a few ringgit. Early-upliftment interest uses the common industry rule — nothing before 3 completed months, then half the interest for completed months — but each bank sets its own policy, so check your FD terms. PIDM protects eligible deposits up to RM 250,000.00 per depositor per member bank.

How to use

  1. Enter the deposit amount and the rate the bank quotes for that tenure (always per annum).
  2. Enter the tenure in months — 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are the usual board-rate buckets.
  3. Set 'Times placed' above 1 to compound the interest through auto-renewal.
  4. Check the early-upliftment figure before you commit money you may need back.

Frequently asked questions

Is an FD rate quoted per annum or for the tenure?

Always per annum. A 3.50% rate on a 6-month FD pays roughly half of 3.50% — about RM875 on RM50,000, not RM1,750. This is the single most common mistake when comparing FD promotions.

Does a fixed deposit compound?

Not within a single placement — a standard Malaysian FD pays simple interest at maturity. Compounding only happens if you let it auto-renew with the interest rolled into the new principal, which is what 'Times placed' models here.

What happens if I break the FD early?

The long-standing industry rule is that you get nothing if you uplift before three completed months, and half the interest for completed months after that. Since 2019 most banks also allow partial withdrawal in multiples of RM1,000 with the remaining balance keeping its contracted rate — check your own FD terms, as policies differ by bank.

Is FD interest taxable in Malaysia?

For an individual, no. Interest and Islamic profit from a deposit with a licensed Malaysian bank is exempt under Paragraph 35, Schedule 6 of the Income Tax Act — at any amount and any tenure. Companies are taxed on it.

How much of my deposit is protected?

PIDM protects eligible deposits up to RM250,000 per depositor per member bank, covering principal plus accrued interest. Conventional and Islamic deposits are protected separately, so spreading large sums across banks keeps everything covered.
